Although it’s part of the job, I hate social media. That is, with one exception. Instagram. It’s kind of the greatest. When I’m stopped at a red light, waiting in line at the grocery store, or (being honest) procrastinating at work, it’s my go-to time killer.
Yep, I’m a little addicted.
The problem with Instagram is that it’s easy to get caught up in the seemingly perfect lives conveyed by heavily filtered and curated pictures. Because let’s face it, nobody posts pictures when they’re stopped at a red light, waiting in line at the grocery store, or procrastinating at work. There’s even a term for it – instagram envy.
Although I definitely follow my fair share of celebrities and lifestyle bloggers and beautiful people who live in Paris, I like to keep it real with mostly accounts that leave me feeling good about the world and about myself. I’ve rounded up 10 of my favorite instagram feeds that inspire joy, not envy. If you have any favorites that I missed, please share in the comments!
NATGEO // The world we live in is stunning, complex, tragic, joyful, diverse and magical. The gorgeous pictures on this feed are a daily reminder of how lucky we are to experience even little pieces of it, and inspiration to see even more.
IMMAEATTHAT // My friend Kylie is a food blogger and beautiful photographer. She’s also a dietitian. She’s also 100% real. On her feed you’ll see beautiful pictures of bright veggie packed salads right next to pictures of Smashburger, which yes, dietitians do eat on occasion.
EFFYOURBEAUTYSTANDARDS // Created by Tess Holliday, the famous plus size model (another great instagram to follow!), this account shares pictures that prove there’s more to beauty than size 2, blonde hair and blue eyes.
NUDE_NUTRITIONIST // This Australia based dietitian lost over 40 lbs after breaking up with diets. The pictures she shares of food are absolutely droolworthy, and I love her no rules approach to eating!
LAURENFOWLERRDN // Another dietitian who works with a non-diet, intuitive eating approach. She posts gorgeous pictures, especially of her outdoor yoga practice (which seriously makes me want to move to Vermont), but what I appreciate most is her insightful commentary on moving and nourishing your body.
GKSTORIES // If their photography doesn’t inspire you to eat whole foods, I don’t know what will.
HUMANSOFNY // The instagram account of a photographer who has made it his mission to collect portraits and stories of the people of NYC. His facebook page is one of the few places on the internet where reading the comments doesn’t make you scared for humanity.
Also, he introduced the world to this guy.
BIGGALYOGA // I’m a big believer in the power of yoga to transform both body and mind. It makes me sad to hear from clients or friends who are scared to start a practice if they don’t fit a certain mold. This account proves yoga is for everyone.
HAPPSTERS // Because everyone loves a good quote.
LEGALNOMADS // This one’s for you travel lovers. A former lawyer who left her job to travel the world. Gorgeous pictures. Mouthwatering food. Recently used her posts to plan our trip to Vietnam.
