Welcome to the The Sunday Paper, where each week I share my favorite recipes and inspiration for a happy and healthy life for you to enjoy on a leisurely Sunday. For more throughout the week, follow me on twitter, pinterest and facebook.
This week’s Sunday Paper features summery popsicles inspired by the juice bar, how an oil found in most processed food could be affecting your weight, and why your sandwich could be making you sad.
It’s been an exciting week here at Avocado Headquarters! Earlier this week, I signed a lease on a new office! These past few months especially, I’ve really been focusing on growing my client base here in Columbia, so I’m thrilled to have a home base. When I first started my practice, I was renting an office out in the suburbs which was part of a small fitness studio. Of all crazy and horrible things to happen, there was an arsonist in the area who set fire to our studio (as well as 16 other small businesses). It sounds horrible, but it actually turned out to be a blessing for all of us. Most of my clients were downtown or virtual, so I really wasn’t getting much use out of it.
Anyway, this new place is pretty much perfect! I’m located in Rainbow Row, a series of brightly colored houses downtown. My office is upstairs and it’s got great aesthetics – tall ceilings, wood paneling and it even has a fireplace! I’m also very excited to be sharing the building with a group of incredibly accomplished, involved and intelligent women. As my new landlord mentioned, the building has great karma.
Other than that, my week has been pretty uneventful. On Monday I taught a diabetes class at the hospital and helped out there another day this week, so between that, my client work and writing, it’s been quite full. Not much free time, but I always can make room for shopping! Hit the tax free weekend sales then went to the sidewalk sale on Devine St, a cute little street filled with boutiques that’s walkable from our house. Get ready to see me all blinged out between the jewelry I picked up from Hand Picked and my first Rocksbox delivery! Rocksbox is a monthly jewelry rental where stylists hand pick designer pieces based on your style and they did a fantastic job with my first set! As an influencer, you can get one free month using my code avocadoxoxo!
WATERMELON WEDGE SALAD WITH KALE AND AVOCADO (Joy the Baker) // Isn’t this just the cutest thing?
TOSTADAS WITH SWEET CORN HUMMUS (Love and Lemons) // If I could stand not to eat all the sweet corn hummus by the spoonful, I definitely want to try this!
MEDITERRANEAN ZUCCHINI NOODLES (Delish Knowledge) // In my opinion, olives should be a mandatory addition to pasta sauce.
DETOX POPSICLES (goop) // I hate the word detox, but I don’t hate these refreshing popsicles inspired by the juice bar.
SMALL BATCH GLUTEN FREE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES (Lean Green Bean) // A little gift for those of you who struggle with portion control.
NATURALLY SWEET VEGAN NUTELLA (The Foodie Dietitian) // For everything.
HAPPY & HEALTHY LIVING INSPIRATION:
THE WEIGHT GAIN-INFLAMMATION CONNECTION (My Fitness Pal) // Inflammation is a health buzzword these days. This article does a fantastic job summarizing the negative effect chronic inflammation has on our health, weight and steps you can take to reduce inflammation.
EVERYTHING VEGETARIANS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT B12 (Oh My Veggies) // People are always worried about vegetarians/vegans getting enough protein, pretty much a non-issue. B12 on the other hand, that’s a real concern.
SOYBEAN OIL CAUSES MORE OBESITY THAN FRUCTOSE (Science Daily) // Very interesting (and surprising!) study. I’ve always avoided soybean oil because it’s inflammatory and not very environmentally friendly, but never considered it could have an impact on weight. Helpful hint – soybean oil is almost exclusively found in processed foods, so by choosing more real food, you’re automatically cutting back.
PALEO DIET: BIG BRAINS NEEDED CARBS (Science Daily) // One of my qualms with the paleo diet is that it tends to morph into a version of low carb.
WHITE BREAD, PASTA AND AN INCREASED RISK OF DEPRESSION (Washington Post) // You know what’s not a Good Mood Food? Refined grains and added sugar (unless it’s really delicious and in that case, it’s worth it!).
THIS WEEK ON AVOCADO:
CRISPY SRIRACHA-LIME CAULIFLOWER TACOS // I’m still sweating.
WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: A SIMPLE MINDSET SHIFT TO START A CONSISTENT EXERCISE HABIT // An important read for any of my fellow last kids picked for the team.
GRILLED PEACH AND VIDALIA ONION SALSA // A tasty tribute to Georgia!
11 NUTRITIONISTS REVEAL WHAT THEY ORDER AT POPULAR FOOD CHAINS (Mind Body Green) // I’m a bit of a food snob when it comes to going out to eat, but if you’ve gotta go to a chain, choose one of these healthier options.
